Andy and Elmer's Apple Dumpling Adventure is a delightful story of a young entrepreneur named Andy who, while building his own apple dumpling business, learns some valuable lessons in ethics from an “inner voice” that helps him to think, say, and do the right things.

This book has been field-tested in Fairborn and other school districts in southwest Ohio.  Its author, Andy Shoup, is a writer and graphic artist locally known for his books on values for children.  He has written a series of books based on a character named Toko.

Not long ago, Mr. Shoup was commissioned by the Fairborn Rotary Club to write and publish Andy and Elmer's Apple Dumpling Adventure to teach the Four-Way Test to children in the first through fourth grades.  It is a direct implementation of our focus on Future Generations: being a friend of education and an example to youth.  The book is large (9” x 11”), with large, friendly print and engaging artwork.  It even includes a recipe for delicious apple dumplings.

Our original vision was to distribute these books in a manner similar to the Dictionary Project, buying them by the hundreds and handing them out to each child in the primary school system.  Other local clubs shared in this vision and our first batch of 5000 books were sold out before they arrived from the printers!  We are now prepared to accommodate the needs of other clubs as the word spreads to other Rotary districts and Rotary International.  Recommended distribution targets include schools, libraries, hospitals, childrens' hospitals, day-care centers, and the offices of dentists, optometrists, veterinarians and doctors.  You can find additional literacy project ideas here.
